Our Story

A Coral + Hive rug is a considered choice, our rugs are handwoven from natural fibres which will bring warmth and a feeling of calm to your home.

MADE BY HAND FROM NATURE

Coral + Hive is a boutique rug studio creating custom, handwoven pieces from natural fibres. Our home is in Cape Town, South Africa, where we work alongside one of the largest weaving looms in Africa. It’s a humming hive of creativity, where we design and produce perfectly imperfect rugs for thoughtful spaces around the world. We’re supported by our London showroom and a family-run loom partner in India.

Our ethos is to create thoughtful natural rugs that will live beautifully alongside you. Our rugs are woven from carefully sourced natural materials in a handmade process that embraces slow living design. We are passionate about a gentler and slower way of life. Our collection has been carefully designed to help you simplify and create a sanctuary feeling in your home.

Jeannine Birch

Jeannine started Coral + Hive as a natural home interior brand to share the magic of South African makers. She grew up watching and admiring the art of weaving, and is personally passionate about the creative process behind woven craftsmanship. Jeannine has a natural talent with colour, texture and pattern, as well as an intuitive awareness of how these elements contribute to a sense of wellbeing in a space. Her creative vision can be found in every element of Coral + Hive.

Materials

Touched by many hands, our fibres are handled with so much care and respect. It’s an honour to weave with some of nature’s most beautiful materials. Sourced in small batches, the wool is combed, brushed, washed and hand spun before being stretched and dried in the sunshine. The process of weaving and spinning is energy efficient and a real celebration of slow considered rug weaving.

The blend of our mohair and karakul wool brings depth and texture to your rug. Our textures are unique to our loom, giving our rugs an understated luxurious feeling.

Karakul wool and mohair comes in a myriad of natural hues, from chocolate brown, to the golden honey tone of combed lox mohair, through to shades of silver and natural white.

Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t an afterthought – it’s part of our foundation. We work exclusively with natural fibres, sourced from the earth, and keep production local where we can. Each piece is made to last, designed with care to tread lightly and hold meaning for years to come.

Our rugs are gentle on the planet, timeless pieces to cherish.

How we design

Our approach is collaborative and personal. Whether adapting a design from our core collection or creating something entirely unique, we work closely with each client – guiding them through fibre, colour, scale, and texture to create something meaningful and woven to last.

INDIA

We also partner with  family-owned looms in India to offer a wider range of techniques and textures – from laid-back flatweaves to luxurious wool-silk blends. This allows us to expand our natural rug offering and bring creative ideas to loom.
